Not for me the dance routine, the capped-teeth gleam, the clothes you’d never wear, the joyless smile, the lights, the show, the mums-will-like-it hair….

I formed Some Rare Footage in 1984, when the industrial world left me in a dole queue with a minimal payout and a lot of time. I sent my first tape to the man who did the music reviews for the local paper; he seemed to like a lot of the same stuff that I liked, so I thought he might go easy on me. He must have liked it - he joined the band. He was, and indeed still is, Kelvin Knight, ex-Delta 5 drummer, and a man who can detect a pint of Guinness from a distance of two miles.

Next thing I know, I’m at one end of a huge table, and way down at the other end, a music biz type is talking out of his…well, let’s just say he was sitting down, so it was a bit muffled. I had to run away, and now I’m here and he’s probably worth millions. But is he happy? Yes. Incredibly happy.

We trudged steadily towards hard-earned obscurity, the music got darker and darker and, after “MEM5”, something had to give. Sadly, it was my friend Kelvin. Life treated him like he just ran over its dog, and he left the East London squat for York, his family, and some sort of recovery.

Send mailThen, and not for the last time, rescue came from out of the blue. A letter from Marc at Bacchanalian Revel, who loved the sound and would like to distribute our tapes. This was swiftly followed by Marianne, bass player of no fixed ability. These two wonderful people lifted Some Rare Footage from the dark depths of despair to quite shallow despair, and I shall always be in their debt.

Being on such a high, things could only get worse, and at the beginning of the year 2000, Marc decided that BR was no more, so we were on our own again. The story of SRF starts to read like a bad proverb, because very shortly after that, two brand new saviours came along. Firstly Keith Allison, genius website designer and top Tom Verlaine fan asked if I would help him on a track for a tribute album. Oh what fun we had - so much so that plans to do more songs were immediately made! Next, Brian Hall of the very cool Outside Records in the U.S.A. asked if we would like to have some tracks on a forthcoming compilation CD. Oh yes. Oh very much.

Back to IndexSo here we are, back from the brink again, and it’s bigger, brighter and better than ever.

Cheers!
Ric.
